UN Population Fund, Put Simply

By Campaign Agent Daphne Bugler As it was recently revealed that the United States would be withdrawing funding for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), it is important to understand exactly what this organisation is.

The UNFPA works with a goal of ‘delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every child birth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled’. Since 1969, the organisation works to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, ensuring that young women are able to live their lives the way they choose. The UNFPA claims to have halved the number and rate of women dying from complications of childbirth and pregnancy since their founding.

With almost a billion people remaining in extreme poverty, this organisation is crucial for helping to tackle sexual and reproductive health problems. This includes giving women the chance and opportunity to decide if they want to go ahead with a pregnancy, the policy which is arguably losing them the US funding. Since Donald Trump took over as US president, his government have campaigned against abortion, and against providing women with their own choice about pregnancy.

UNFPA is incredibly important in ensuring that those women who decide to give birth can do so safely. This includes providing access to appropriate medical staff, and helping them understand how to take measures during their pregnancy that can help ensure a safe delivery.

UNFPA advocates the rights of young people to have access to information about sexual health, and that if young people are educated it can help break poverty cycles, and lead to a more sustainable future.
